Going Up

The scale of development that's going on around where Roam lives in Wembley Park is staggering. High-rise apartment and office buildings are going up everywhere around the stadium. I found it mind-blowing just to stand and watch all the activity: thousands of construction workers, possibly even more architects and engineers and managers, all the logistics. Someone, somewhere, is at the top of that chain, having responsibility for it all. It made me appreciate how much we take for granted, how easy it is for us to criticise when projects overrun in terms of time and cost, without ever taking into consideration the fiendish complexity of these undertakings. The whole area is being transformed, but not in an unattractive way. There is a buzz to the place and it's only going to grow.

After our run the previous evening Roam had a moment of madness and challenged me to a race this morning, over three laps of Wembley Stadium, lapping in opposite directions to make it interesting. I discovered that my competitive streak is still there. He's going to feel very sore tomorrow. I've no idea what he was thinking. He got revenge later over the table tennis table.
