Slip Sliding Away

Today we drove home via the Kaikoura coast.  The Kaikoura earthquake was in November 2016 and the earth really did move.  Kaikoura moved to the northeast by nearly a metre and rose by 70 centimetres.  The railway line and highway hug the coast and it was striking to see a much wider strip of rocky foreshore as in extra 1.  The exposed rock once had sea life living on it in the tide zone but now it is high and dry and bare after the sea life died off.
All manner of road construction is taking place.  We saw cliff stabilisation with huge nets pinned to the rock face.  In places a line of containers were used to hold back the sliding material from covering the road.  Several new bridges, road realignment and new sea wall building using big concrete cubes.  The stop go delays were not too bad and it was interesting to see what they were working on.  The town of Kaikoura was busy with visitors.
