Lead Chapel, Saxton near Tadcaster

This morning, despite driving rain, I went on a pre-arranged visit to this tiny fourteenth century chapel in a field near Tadcaster. Fortunately, the sun came out almost immediately on our arrival, providing lovely light to the interior. Probably worth viewing large.

This is all that remains of an estate owned by the Tyas family who are reputed to have been buried in the chapel.

The building, close to the site of the Battle of Towton(1461) in the War of the Roses, fell into disrepair and was rescued by local ramblers in the 1930s.

It is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust and is well worth a visit. More details here
