The Epiphany or Three Kings' Day

Three Kings' Day falls on January 6th, so why would I be writing about it near the end of the month?  Well, many boulangeries (bread and cake shops), keep making these special 'galettes des rois' (Kings' Day breads and cakes) all through the month of January. Since I had a friend over for late breakfast, we thought it would be fun to buy one of these traditional breads, always sold with a crown. Inside the bread is hidden a small figure or crown and the person who gets it in his or her slice of bread is king or queen for the day and can wear the crown!

This particular 'pâtisserie' is called Gâteau Pithiviers, which is a classic French tart made from flaky pastry and filled with almond paste. Please see extras for more photos.

One year, I made a homemade Pithiviers and wanted to make the filling extra generous and the pastry burst open and oozed some of the lovely almond filling, we ended up eating the escaped filling on the baking tin with teaspoons!!
