Growing cress in the light and dark - school project thats been sitting in the cupboard all week. Which is which?

Plants grow faster in the dark, which is counter intuitive as they need light to make food. So you'd think they grow faster in the light with lots of food. However they need to compete, so if they are in the dark, they have to find the light quickly, and outgrow other plants. So they put all they can into growing to try and find light, otherwise they'd die. They might still die, but they will die trying!
