Beneath Biscay

Second city

After Gijón, A Coruña (aka Corunna) has become our number two place to be, as a result of daughter C studying here. The two cities have a lot in common, being north coast ports of about the same size. I'd say that A Coruña (aka La Coruña) has a bit more Buzz however. This is probably because it is the capital of one of Galicia's four provinces, whereas Oviedo rather than Gijón Is capital of Asturias' sole province. Therefore A Coruña benefits from the extra administrative activity.

Arrived here today in time for lunch with C, then a bit of shopping in the edge of town mall, Marineda City. This gave me the opportunity to visit C&A, given that our local branch in Asturias has closed. I'm a fan of C&A but student daughter C isn't. This might explain why, as it turns out, this branch too is due to close, in February. Did some food shopping for C, then back to drop her off and check into our hotel.

We decided to try a different, more central, hotel from our usual Eurostars. This is the NH Atlántico. Although we paid a bit extra for a special room on an upper floor we forgot to ask for a room facing the port and the room itself is just average. Also breakfast is ridiculously expensive at €19 per person. A small tin of gums (sweets) in the room €6. The central location is great and staff friendly, but next time I think it will be back to Eurostars.

In the evening we went out for a pre-prandial to the Caneca Furada bar which specialises in craft beers, ales etc. Had a bottle of the Mikkeler Danish beer. For taste it's streets ahead of any other low/non-alcohol beer I've ever drunk. This at 0.3%. After this encounter with a bottle of guilt-free deliciousness we met up with C again for an evening meal at the Tapa Negra.

Tomorrow we're planning to go somewhere out of town for lunch. Maybe Laxe.
