signs of spring

The usual busyness at work juggling various tasks. Somehow I got into looking at traffic in Edinburgh and started playing with the data. If only I had some more time...

Went to a really interesting lecture with Felix on plate tectonics and why people still die in earthquakes. It seems like the big Asian earthquakes are relatively rare (not within living memory for a particular place) that people don't take earthquakes into consideration when building their homes. Around the Pacific big earthquakes happen regularly with relatively few fatalities. The buildings are engineered to cope and people know what to do. The big Asian earthquakes happen every 100 years or so with 30% fatalities which is eye-wateringly shocking. It can be solved by having tighter building regulations and educating people.
