Vilnius Cathdral

Another full on day teaching which seemed to go well, hard work operating through an interpreter in some ways but gives you more thinking time. I hit the old town straight away as dusk fell before meeting with a few folks for dinner.

The cathedral in soviet times was converted to a warehouse. It became I'm told the focus for the liberation movement in the early 90s, Lithuania was the first soviet block country to gain independence. The church is very much active now, I really like calling in here when I'm in town. You can see a small part of the large square where those liberation crowds would have gathered, and where for years before any attempt at meeting would probably have been quashed. It's a lovely safe space these days, tonight here was frisbee being played, couples courting, babies in prams being pushed by very stylishly dressed young mums, skateboarders, cyclists, and a blipper blipping, a place where freedom was being lived out unconsciously, or so it seemed.
