Jitney

As mentioned yesterday, pick-ups were called "Jitneys" in Trinidad, even when my father was later to get a Land Rover - Short Wheel Base with canvas load area.

"Jitney" and "Jeepney" are commonly the words used in several parts of the world to describe small buses/taxis. I suspect the Trinidadian version has the same origin as the Philippines Jeepney which were post-WWII buses made from old Willys Jeep chassis and parts.

In the photo, Mum with Sloper and if you look closely, one may make out the "car" is actually a pick-up.
