Myakka state park

Drove down to Myakka state park for the day, which is well worth a visit. We did the boat trip and the tram trip and got the chance to see plenty of alligators as they are everywhere!

We also got to see (and smell) thousands of dead and rotting fish which had been killed by the recent cold snap. The enormous number of vultures it attracted still couldn’t eat all the dead fish, but it was quite a sight to see hundreds of them circling around. The fish who died were non-native to Florida and an invasive species from further south as the local fish can survive a little cold, so the weather succeeded where human attempts to get rid of the invasive fish had failed.

After our tours we had lunch at the visitor’s centre and I decided to have alligator. It was described to me as a lobster/chicken sort of taste and that’s not far off the mark. After lunch we went across the canopy walkway and then climbed to the top of the tower, which gave us a good view of some of the massive park.
