Old Moon

Moon is older than history.

It was there at the beginning.

It’s much much much much older than you, child.

And yes, it’s even older
than white-haired old me!

It’s ancient.
It’s wondrous.

More ancient
than the Ancient Egyptians.

More wondrous than the pyramids.

Tutankhamun will have looked up at it.
So will all of those folk working hard to build the pyramids.

And Florence Nightingale.

And Marie Curie.

And Julius Caesar.

And Gandhi.

And Stone Age man.
(And woman).

And howling wolves and dinosaurs.

And mums and dads and grannies and grandads,
and all of their mums and dads and grannies and grandads,
and all of theirs and theirs and theirs and theirs
and so on.

Your teachers will have examined it.
Your friends will all have stared at it.

Shakespeare and J.K. Rowling and Roald Dahl and Walt Disney
and anyone else you care to mention
will have seen it.

All over the world everyone knows about the moon,
the wondrous moon,
the marvellous moon.

Everyone knows about it
and keeps an eye on it.
