Basildon Bell Tower

A trip to Basildon today - we don't often visit there (sshh don't tell anyone but we're not big fans!) but had an appointment there so needs must!

Thankfully the appointment went well and I managed to grab this snap of the St Martins Bell Tower which is next to the church and opened by the Queen, no less, in 1999!  All the bells were cast at the Whitechapel Bell foundry in the east end of London over 500 years ago.

The Tenor bell was cast in 1441 by Joanna Hille .and is the first bell in the world to have been cast by a woman
All eight Bells were dedicated by The Rt. Revd. John Perry Bishop of Chelmsford on the 40th Anniversary of  St Martin's Church in November 2002.
