The Tartan Kirkie

I have always admired St Mary’s Episcopal Church in Aberdeen but only learnt today that it is called the “Tartan Kirkie “. Founded under the Oxford movement in 1863. Tartan so called because of the different colours of granite used in its construction . It was bombed on the 21st April 1943. On that night alone the death toll in Aberdeen was 98 civilians and 27 soldiers with another 235 injured
