A wander round the ruins of Bramber Castle...

...before we left for home today...
It is a typical motte and bailey construction, with the gatehouse wall and some of the curtain walls still standing.
The land was given to the de Braose family by William the Conqueror, and the castle was part of a network created to guard the strategically important Sussex coast.
It was allowed to decay into ruins after the family fell out of favour with King John, but still remains picturesque - which is a good thing for the derelict collection this month ;) 
The extra shows the view of the gatehouse wall from the steep path up from the village.
