Appelesiene sjmiete

Today's pictures are taken at the town square of our town, where people get together to celebrate the 3rd day of Carnival with this local tradition of "appelesiene sjmiete" which means "throwing oranges" as a treat for everybody on the square.
This tradition goes back to 1881.
At that time children of poor people became oranges, rich in vitamine C, to carry them through the second part of Winter.
Luckily times have changed, but the tradition remains..
.
On the extras some more impressions of the celebration and I spotted Elvis also in town...
