Hirundography

Also Jane

We'd been invited to an exhibition preview at the North York Moors Centre in Danby by a photographer I'd met at York Open Studios a couple of years ago. By the by, his stuff is brilliant and we nattered lots and agreed to meet up soon. Anyway, this image...

It's quite tortuous crossing the whole of the moor from York (big county, Yorkshire - OK then, by UK standards anyway...) so we swung round the top and dropped down via Guisborough.

On the way, we stopped off in Stokesley, a grand little town on the northern fringe of the county. J's "Little Gran" (see previous blips...) came from there and several of her forebears are buried in the churchyard.

Unfortunately, the head stones are all of soft sandstone and very weathered, but we found three, possibly four. This one, understandably caught J's eye.

Even with as many tweaks as I can (the light was rubbish too), the wording can only be just made out. We're going to contact the vicar and go back and try find out more...

"Also Jane Ann, her daughter, who died July ___ 1867, Aged 2 years."
