Hardknott Fort

Fairlie dreich this morning, but magnificent views behind the clouds, so after a wee spot of lunch in Grasmere we took the "interesting" drive up the Wrynose Pass and Hardknott Pass (1 in 3 hills on double bends with sheer drops over the sides) to see the remains of the enormous Hardknott Fort ordered by Emperor Hadrian nearly 2000 years ago. It held about 500 soldiers from cosy Croatia. What must they have thought -It was freezing, and I had to use my new gloves bought that very day in Grasmere. They are brilliant - I had some last winter and almost wore them out. Very thin wool with hundreds of tiny wee rubber dots on the palms & fingers so that you can still work the camera controls without it slipping from frozen fingers. I bought an extra pair to keep in the car. They cost the princely sum of £2.99. This is a panorama of 4 pictures, looking down the steep valley towards Boot and Ravenglass at the sea.
