Gran Parque Nacional, Sierra Maestra, Cuba

The national park, which covers an area of 38,000 hectares, spans the provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba. This is where the major peaks of the island are found, including Pico Turquino which, at 6,390ft, is the highest in Cuba.

The Sierra Meastra is also home to sites made famous by the guerilla war waged by Fidel Castro and the barbudos. With a permit, you can go to the Comandancia de la Plata, Castro's hidden headquarters where there is now a museum, a small camp hospital and the site from where Che Guevara made his radio broadcasts.
