Cochin backwaters

We had a wonderful day out today - we were taken to the backwaters to see how village life was, and possibly still is in many places, in Kerela. Kerela means The place of coconuts and at this co-operative we saw how almost every bit of the coconut tree and fruit are utilised. We went by canoe and saw some of the fishing nets, not in use sadly today, though we did see a man collecting clams and putting them in his canoe (extra). We watched a potter make clay pots, a weaver using coconut leaves to make baskets, a lady making brushes out of the coconut leaf stems, hemp being made from the coconut husks and woven into rope. A very interesting and informative day finished off by another absolutely delicious lunch on the waterside.  The gardens had wonderful orchids on the trees as well as many hibiscus, bougainvillea, frangipani etc.  A beautiful spot and an altogether wonderful day.
Back to the hotel after wander about the local area for a swim in the roof top pool,  before a light supper.
