Happy Socks

How can you tell if a sock is happy, sad or just downtrodden? Will it stay happy in the back of a dark drawer surrounded by miserable old socks? Can it be happy when it inevitably loses its mate or will it be even happier to be paired with a wild, non-matcher? Such hosiery conundrums must remain forever unanswered, at least until the rise of the knitting machines.
