Named after the Orlando quartet, which after twenty years has found a (provisional) end in 1996, and the Orlando Festival, which commemorated its 15th anniversary in 1996. Their name is taken from Orlando di Lasso or Roland (de) Lassé, born in 1532 in Bergen (Henegouwen, B) and died in 1594 in Munich. He traveled to Italy in 1544 as a choirboy, became chaplain in St. John of Lateran in 1553, came to Antwerp for a few years and left for Munich in 1557. From 1580 he devoted himself entirely to composing more than 2000 compositions: masses, motets, madrigals and songs. He was one of the representatives of Dutch music in Europe in the 16th century.
