Ten pin bowling (American style)

Nine-pin bowling has been played since the early middle ages.  In the early 19th century it was banned (on impeccable moral grounds, of course) in the USA in every state except Texas.

There was no ban on ten-pin bowling, mainly because it had not been thought of.  The American states subject to the ban followed the legislation to the letter, and the game with an extra pin evolved.

(In Texas tenpin alleys were usually found in saloons and other establishments frequented exclusively by men, ninepin alleys were often built by clubs patronized by families.  So now you know......!)
