RAFTS OF SURF SCOTERS

Yet another thing that I had never seen before.  Huge black rafts of these birds moving slowly between the jetties, followed by ruckus gulls stealing the Scoters prey.  The second day I saw them, they were much closer together like a solid black island.  Then when I'd take my eye off of them, and then look back, it was like 90% of them had disappeared!  They appear to all dive at once.  I met a professional bird watcher lady who was watching them, and she filled me in on them, and other things.  Like the behavior of the Shovelers I saw last week at the eye doctors.  She had seen that behavior before also, but did not know what they feed on.
