A Backyard Friend

I was thinking today about how much I enjoy having the birds in my yard.  I sit at the table and watch them come and go, always hoping for a visit by a hawk, Pileated Woodpecker or seasonal visitor.  Even the regulars are entertaining.  Today one nuthatch flew to the trunk of a large maple tree and passed a sunflower seed to a waiting mate ( I assume).   Soon the Rose-breasted Grosbeak will be making a brief spring time stop while flying through the area, and the American Goldfinches will be in breeding plumage.  This morning it was just me and this female Downy Woodpecker for awhile.  She kept me company while I had my morning cup of coffee.  It was a great way to start the day.
