Wound up in Wexford

Suomenlinna

We took a short ferry trip, interesting for the way the ferry motored through the broken but quite hefty chunks of sea ice, and arrived at an island off Helsinki called Suomenlinna. This is a World Heritage Site, originally built as a fort.

We had an enjoyable wander around, lots of photos. I liked the wood against the stone here. I've added extras. The first of the church, which began life as Russian orthodox, and was subsequently reconsecrated as Lutheran. It is unique in having an additional function as a lighthouse. The bell in the separate belltower was made in Russia, and is the largest in Finland. The second extra is the ferry ploughing through the ice.
