What struck my fancy

A cheery wave

This is the train from King's Lynn to London King's Cross and the driver is reciprocating grandson's cheery wave. We had been out for a drive, found a very narrow rough road which came to a self-operated gated railway crossing.

You have to phone, when given the all clear you open both sets of gates, drive across, shut the gates (£1000 penalty for failing to do so) then phone again after the tasks are completed to reassure the staff all is as it should be. I had seen these crossings from the train window but never before had to actually deal with one.

Accidents do occur and feature in the news from time to time - mangled cars and fatalities - so I was relieved to have accomplished the job without any anxious moments. Grandson helped with the gates and said he had been across such a crossing before - so he was a step ahead, as usual.
