Goldcrest

I went off to Deerness on a grey and cloudy day (yesterday was beautiful- but I was working!) and looked for birds. Winds have blown interesting Siberian species like rubythroats to Shetland and I hoped to find some here. I didn't . What I did see were about seventeen snipe at Grindigar Farm, two-hundred and fifty golden plover, a merlin etc.
I came across Alan of the local RSPB mist-netting at a small plantation. He ringed this goldcrest- it weighed a little over 10 grammes and had probably just flown across the North Sea from Norway, Denmark or Germany. Incredible!
