Last night MrM and I stayed at a rather quirky, very old inn at Alderwasley, a tiny village in Derbyshire. After enjoying steak with all the trimmings (not something I would normally choose, but it was steak and nothing but steak night), we decided on an early night. Though the bed was comfortable, neither of us slept - in my case due to a brain that refused to switch off, and remained on the ‘random replay’ setting all night.

This morning we looked out of the window at torrential rain and thick fog. So, after a very good breakfast, we abandoned plans to visit Arbour Low stone circle and Buxton and, instead, started the long drive home. In traditional MrM fashion, we meandered back, and had a couple of breaks en route. The first was in Bamford, in the High Peak, for coffee in the cafe at the Anglers Rest. Originally the Anglers Inn, it was bought by Bamford Community Society in 2012 and turned into a thriving community hub with a cafe, pub, post office and bunkhouse. Worth seeking out if you’re in the area!

After negotiating Snake Pass (still thick fog and heavy rain…) we continued as far as Boroughbridge, where we stopped a while to stretch our legs and buy some lunch - the pie shop does very good sandwiches as well as pies, not to mention cakes. How could I resist a florentine?

Safely back home by late afternoon to unpack and relax after a long day…
