Brimstone

The spring equinox marked in my father's garden by the appearance of the first brimstone of the year. This one is adopting the characteristic pose for this time of year - lying almost flat on the ground to maximise the surface area warmed by the sun. Despite the temperature being only nine or ten degrees this was one of three species seen this morning - the other two being Red Admiral and Peacock. Official butterfly recording starts in about two weeks time but I'm not sure whether I'm going to be able to get home to start my three transects on time.
