Triptych, St Peter's, Gloucester

You've got to see the extras, even though they don't do it the justice it deserves. To see this 'in the flesh' is quite amazing, nothing prepares you for when those front panels open if you don't know what's inside.
It depicts the coronation of the Virgin Mary as the Queen of heaven with God and Jesus Christ above her placing the crown on her head.

This triptych is in St Peter's Church, Gloucester, where Marlane and I were married in May 1975. It is in the Sacristy corridor to the right of the sanctuary.
It dates from 1856 when there were two made, I can't remember the name of the sculptor, but one was destroyed long ago so this is the only one of it's kind in existence although triptychs of many kinds are very common.
This one was restored in 2015 being re-gilded, repaired and cleaned, and reinstalled in it's current location September 14th 2015.

Apart from the interior and the side panels on each side there are small statues of St George slaying the dragon and on the other St Michael casting Satan down to Hell.

I'm not a religious person but this is an outstanding piece of art.
