The Cake Thief!

Turns out my mate Pal is a cake thief. I turned my back for a moment to put money in the collection tin and whoosh one cupcake snatched!

Pal’s dad Steve recovered the cake before it was consumed and cheeky Pal got a (little) ticking off. But only a little one as he’s worked hard tonight.

Rewind 90 minutes earlier, pre-cake snatching, and Pal was doing his job alerting Claire to a hypo just as she was about to commence a talk to the 2nd Girls Guides in Coxheath.

A few licks of the hand and an attentive sit and watch from Pal, and the audience, while Claire checked her sugar levels and a reading of 2.6 on the monitor popped up. A quick intake of glucose, some orange juice and off with the insulin pump and Claire began her talk.

A couple of minutes later and Pal is standing up and nudging Claire with a paw. “Err ‘scuze me Mum but I’m still not a happy pup. Get your testing kit out please!”

Another check and some more juice, followed by a treat for Pal, and all the while Claire continues her talk. I’m sat next to hubby Steve and he tells me it’s the seventh alert today. A few seconds later and Claire tells the audience the same thing. One of the mums asks what would happen if she didn’t have Pal in a situation like that. Claire replies it most likely would be an ambulance call out as her body doesn’t detect hypos.

After a few minutes Pal relaxed and off he goes floor sniffing around the scout hut for crumbs and sneaking off to the cake table winding his way between the Girl Guides and their parents, wagging tail going ten to the dozen.

It was a fun evening supporting Claire and Pal talking to the Girl Guides this evening about the Medical Detection Dogs Charity.
We raised awareness, sold some merchandise and helped the guides fundraise by eating homemade cakes. See a few more pics here.

Meanwhile Pal was a great ambassador as ever demonstrating his lifesaving nose with its 300 million scent receptors!
