RW's Daily Exposures

European Starling

First brought to North America shortly after the U.S. colonies had been established and Central Park in New York was setup. During a particular Shakespeare play Starlings were released. These birds were brought from England by wooden ships to perform their duties for the people now, so far from their homes and in a new land. Now, Starlings have established themselves in all four corners of the U.S. and in many parts of the once, new lands of America. They are very opportunistic. but then again, what respectable bird isn't.

In the right light, they are quite beautiful. Blacks, purples, silver-brown splotches, aqua-greens, orange feet and beak. And their song or call is like a wolf whistle.

Enjoy!
