Castle of Haeren

Castle Haeren
Haeren Castle is one of the five castles of the municipality of Voerendaal. It is a castle with four wings around a courtyard. The front wing forms the castle itself and overlooks a drained moat. It was restored in the eighties and nineties. The castle is now divided into apartments that are privately occupied, and is therefore not accessible for viewing. However, one can walk around the open estate and the forest belonging to castle Haeren.

The castle was first mentioned in 2 July 1371. On that day riddre Hoen was loaned with the court of Haeren. The Hoen family, later Van Hoensbroeck, kept the castle until 1671. By inheritance it came into the possession of the noble De Haudion family. In 1701 Haeren was sold to Herman Georg van Tunderfelt, general in Imperial service of governor of the Duchy of Luxembourg. Subsequently, in 1772, the rich Van der Vaal business family Van Clermont got possession of it. In 1770, the magistrate Willem Willem van Panhuys became the owner. Under his leadership, the castle was thoroughly restored and provided for a vast geometric garden complex, of which a few lanes remain.
The noble family of Panhuys Haeren sold in 1882 to the Maastricht attorney. Eugene van Oppen. In 1959 the castle was sold by the Oppen family. The left part came into the possession of the children's home "Vinkennest". The right part, the farm, came into the hands of farmer Leonard Joseph Steinbusch. Currently the entire complex is divided into five owners.
