The Königspitze (Italian: Gran Zebrù) is the second highest peak in the Ortler Alps. It was also the ultimate objective of our 4-days ski mountaineering trip in the area. After a tragic avalanche accident at the mountain on the previous Thursday with three fatalities we decided to forego the ascend and look for other destinations.

The photo of Königspitze at sunset was taken from a spot close to Rifugio Gianni Casati (elevation 3,269 m) at Langenfernerjoch (Italian: Passo del Cevedale), where we stayed the first night. The hut is located at the border between the Italian regions of Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, which is also the language border between the German speaking Province of South Tyrol and the Italian speaking Province of Sondrio.
