nonsenses & truths

I like a suitable book when on an adventure, and inspired by the route of yesterday's ride I'd taken one of John Buchan's Edward Leithen stories.  They very much reflect their time and author's position in life so there's a fair bit of misogyny and racism, the former somewhat tempered eventually by a strong female character but the later not at all.  The social and political landscape may have changed a good deal but I was thinking yesterday as I rode past the source of the River Tweed that the landscape around here is probably pretty much the same.
