The Scales of it

This morning I got up at 5 15 to head to Tsukiji, the biggest fish market on Earth. It was moderately lethal, with sharp knives, hundreds of zooming little trucks (called mighty cars), and brusque shoppers. I felt very much like a tourist, amongst all the people buying huge amounts of fish. I tried not to get in the way, but still felt conspicuous. It was a temple of gore. Tuna cut up like timber with bandsaws, eels held in place with a nail to the head, and these scales, surrounded with blood.
