Planting for posterity

Liam's been clearing the briar patch here for a while and, as previously blipped,  balancing stones as he goes along. Although the removal of the brambles meant an invasion of sheep during the snowy weather (they cropped the grass but  munched the primroses),  the area has opened up so much that I thought of planting a small copse of trees and shrubs. So today Nick, our tree man, brought and planted a selection of native species:  guelder rose, dogwood and cobnut to create an understory, with rowan, lime, birch, oak and beech to add height when the dominant ash trees, of which we have plenty, are overtaken by the dieback dsease that is predicted to destroy them. That will no doubt be after my time but meanwhile there will be the pleasant anticipation of a feast of flowers, berries and nuts for the birds and the bees (and us).
Here,  Liam is banging in a fence post in an effort to make the area a bit more sheep-proof while Nick wielding a shovel to plant another sapling. If he looks like a gravedigger that's not far off because right where he's working are the graves of Bottle and Jemima, our dear departed ram and goat. Nick's eyes lit up when I mentioned them -  they will provide a good source of potassium for the young trees.
