Woeste Hoeve

This hamlet, name means Savage Farm, was the scene of an assassination attempt against a Nazi Germany official, Rauter, on 6 March 1945. He was injured, but in reprisal, 117 people were gathered here and summarily executed. In total, about 260 civilians were shot in revenge for the attack against Rauter. Since '45, there have been about eight different memorials on this spot, but this one, dating back to 1992, is the latest. It's perhaps not immediately clear on this picture, but the screen behind the cross lists the names of all the dead on a panel of clear glass.
