Take the Plunge...?

This is the remains of a 18th century Georgian Bath House situated on the banks of the river Wharfe at Wetherby in North Yorkshire. During this period cold bath houses became fashionable amongst landowners and gentry who had suitable locations and the money to build them. These bath houses were not meant for washing, more for the practice of 'taking the plunge' recommended by doctors at the time to relieve anything from headaches to impotence!

It is a two-storey building, this being the entrance to the 1.5m pool which is still fed by cold water running from a spring on the hillside. Other rooms built above it were used for changing clothes and resting. Apparently after the plunge an open fire in the room above gave a place to relax away from the main residence and the view of the servants.

Apparently these places became popular for meeting friends, playing cards and gambling. And because of the seclusion these bath houses were ideal for 'meetings of a more discrete and intimate nature'!

This area is fenced off, but is opened from time to time for a tour round. Hopefully I will be able to go in and have a look round sometime.
