Battle of Culloden

The last battle fought on British soil was the Battle of Culloden. It took place at Drummossie Moor, a few miles west of Inverness. Historians consider it to be one of the bloodiest and most harrowing fought in Britain.

On the 16th April 1746 Jacobite supporters seeking to put Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) on the throne of Britain fought against the government’s troops led by the Duke of Cumberland.

The battle lasted less than an hour and 1,600 men were slain 1,500 of them were Jacobites. All are buried in mass graves on the battlefield. Decisively beaten Bonnie Prince Charlie headed back to the safety of France and a life of obscurity.

The 5 star visitor centre tells the story in graphic detail. The battlefield is both atmospheric and evocative.

My blip shows Leanach Cottage which was used as a field hospital for the government troops in the aftermath of the battle.
