A Meandering Life...

On Guard

This is one of two lions standing guard at the front of the Berks Cemetery Extension which contains 876 First World War burials. Within Berks Cemetery Extension stands the PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL, commemorating more than 11,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died in this sector during the First World War and have no known grave.

Today I made a flying visit to the area of Ploegsteert, Belgium (Flanders Fields) and Mont Noir, France where I took photographs of headstones of Royal Army Medical Corps stretcher bearers who served with my great grandfather during WW1.

Three of them (together with a forth buried elsewhere) were killed during the Spring Offensive one hundred years ago yesterday and rest at Mont Noir Military Cemetery.
