Pomegranate -symbol of rebirth

I bought this pomegranate today and will eat it after writing this, using a pin to pick out each seed as I did as a child. They only seem to be around at this time of year so I associate them with autumn - yet to the Egyptians they were a symbol of rebirth. Pomegranates were found within the tomb of King Tutankhamun and are depicted in Egyptian carvings.

I just found out that the 'seeds' are in fact called 'arils' - seeds encased in a translucent outer coat which is the deep red juicy bit.

It's good to know that they are high in antioxidants and vitamin C - though I'm going to eat mine simply because I like the flavour.
