Around Britain there are 1000 Millennium cast iron mileposts which were funded by the Royal Bank of Scotland to mark the creation of the National Cycle Network.   Four artists were commissioned to design the mileposts which can be found along the cycles routes.
This post was designed by Jon Mills, entitled “The Fossil Tree”. The post takes the form of an abstract tree with relief imagery of fossils depicting the passage of time from early primitive creatures to the ultimate demise of fossil fuel driven technology.
The others, all of which can be seen around Edinburgh, are "The Cockerel" by Iain McColl, "Rowe Type" by Andrew Rowe, and "Tracks" by David Dudgeon with each depicting the distance to some places on the route.
