Old Ghost Road Day 3

High on the ridge, on the top right of the photo, is the Ghost Lake Hut. The descent from here to the valley floor had to be experienced to be believed. It bottomed out in a staircase, which was prefabricated and flown in; the only solution to join the top and bottom of the track.

There's a photo of Ghost Lake itself in Extras. Plus another of my tramping companion, stepping it out above Ghost Lake.

This is from an entry in the Old Ghost Road website -
"A long-forgotten gold miners’ road has been revived as a mountain biking and tramping trail – connecting the old dray road in the Lyell (Upper Buller Gorge) to the mighty Mokihinui River in the north. The 85km-long Old Ghost Road traverses majestic native forest, open tussock tops, river flats and forgotten valleys."

We were utterly amazed at how this track has been constructed, and the amount of work and dedication and love that has gone into it all. New Zealand owes them a debt! An incredible achievement.
