Snow on The Ben

After a very wet start it brightened up into a beautiful sunny day and I headed to the supermarket. Needs must.

On the way home I stopped to capture the view of the mountains with their first sprinkling of snow. Can anyone tell me why the colours are so muted? What am I doing wrong? The camera was on either Intelligent Auto or Scenery setting - I took a few shots, so I can't remember which one I used for this.
