Lucky lilac

Our white lilac tree is a picture this year, smothered in a profusion of blooms. We never cut it for indoors though, because I remember my mother’s superstitious belief that it is ‘lucky lilac in the garden, unlucky inside the house’.
We thought we’d lost the tree in the infamous October 1986 ‘great storm’ (hurricane ), when the ferocity of the wind broke it in half. Happily the puny remnants recovered though, and it is now the handsome tree it has grown into since then.
