(ex) RAF Greenham Common, Newbury, Berkshire

This is a silhouette of the control tower at the old RAF base at Greenham Common. Famous during the cold war for its stocks of nuclear weapons ( and the capability to deliver them ) and the assorted people whom objected to such things - such as the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp. On the grounds that the site closed before we had a nuclear war, I would count their protests to have been a success !

I had half intended to use this site as an entry for the dereliction challenge for May - however it seems that the site, having been unused for years since the closure of the base, has been "done up a bit" with the aim of turning it into a visitor centre and cafe. However it isn't open yet ( and is appealing for volunteers if you happen to be closer than I am and are interested ) - it also could still use a lick of paint and some repairs in other areas if you wander around a bit. This is evidenced in the extra for the day ...
