The Wild Roosters of Arroyo Grande

First you see one or two and it’s very exciting—roosters right in town, oh! Then there’s another and another and they are as commonplace as squirrels, only more colorful. They crow, they strut, they flap their small wings. Roosters are the town symbol, on everything from shirts to hats to names of specialty burgers.

At sunset our friends take us for a ride on the beach—this is one of the few places where it is legal to drive your car on the sand. We go along the tide for about 8 miles, then come back, dodging dune bugggies and campers and parties and flocks of seagulls. It’s a gorgeous sunset and exotic because here we are in a vehicle out of the wind and all is well. Let the vacation begin.

We are on our way to LA to visit family for a long weekend, and this stop is in the Five Cities (Pismo, Nipomo, Arroyo Grande, Oceania, Grover Beach, Shell Beach—wait, that’s six and I’m too tired to look it up, but you get the idea....). Unfortunately I have really bad allergies or something else icky, so I am not the perky wonder we all know and love.
