The Pelican

The light bursting through the Mackintosh Church this afternoon was amazing. For a few minutes it spilled across the back of the Pulpit.

It is believed the oval detail at the back of the pulpit is an interpretation of a Pelican. The Pelican is a symbol of Christ because according to myth she feeds her young with blood from her breast in times of the scarcity of food and thereby gives her life for her young.

Mackintosh never explained the meanings behind his imagery. You can investigate but there can be no conclusion
