She Who Watches

One of the pleasures of being back in Portland is the ease of connecting up with friends and family. My son Vincent and granddaughter Bella and I met at Salt & Straw in NW Portland to sample their May ice cream flavors. The seasonal flavors featured five different varieties of floral flavored ice cream, sherbet, and sorbet. I enjoyed the Rhubarb Crumble with Anise and also the Orange Blossom Sorbet with edible flowers.

We walked around the NW/Nob Hill area, taking in the Victorian buildings, boutiques, eateries, and people-watching. We came upon a mural of She Who Watches, (Tsagaglalal). This is the Wishram Indian word for "She who watches all who are coming and going'".

Tsagaglalal and other petroglyphs were moved from their original sites along the Columbia River when sections of the gorge were flooded by The Dalles Dam. The petroglyphs were moved to higher ground at Horsethief Butte, an ancient Native American gathering place, near our home in the Gorge that we recently sold.

I enjoyed seeing the mural of She Who Watches, recalling our time in the gorge and also enjoying being in Portland again and close to loved ones.
